Drop your PDF above and it is cleaned on your own device. Nothing is uploaded.
A PDF records who made it. The document properties hold the title, author, subject and keywords, the app it was made with ("Created with" and "Produced by") and the dates it was created and last modified. All of these are removed.
So is the less obvious material: XMP metadata, the document ID, private data left by apps such as Illustrator and Photoshop, and the names and dates attached to comments and annotations. Photos embedded in the PDF are cleaned too, so EXIF inside those JPEG images goes as well.
The whole file is rewritten. That matters because some editors add each save to the end of the file, so an old author name or date can survive inside a PDF even after you change the properties. Rewriting discards those earlier saved versions.
What stays: the text and images you can see, and the text of any comments. Only who wrote a comment and when is removed.
Password-protected or encrypted PDFs cannot be cleaned. Remove the protection first, then drop the file again.
Questions
Will this remove text hidden under a black box?
No. This is not a redaction tool. If text was covered with a black box rather than properly redacted, it is still in the file.
Why not just delete the author in my PDF app's properties?
Some editors keep earlier saved versions inside the file, so the old author can still be found. Cleaning here rewrites the whole PDF.

What this can't do
- It doesn't change what's visible. Faces, street signs, reflections, house numbers and text in a photo or document stay as they are.
- It can't remove invisible watermarks. Some services hide tracking codes in the image or text itself.
- Comments and tracked changes stay in documents. Their author names and dates are removed, but their text is kept. Accept or delete them in your editor first.
- Partly cleaned: camera RAW files keep the maker data raw converters need (it can include the camera's serial number); newer Pages, Numbers and Keynote files keep some details in a format this tool can't edit. Convert to DNG, or export to PDF or Office, for a full clean.
- Not supported: Word 95 or older (save it as .docx), InDesign .indd (export to IDML or PDF), AutoCAD .dwg (save as DXF), RAR and 7z archives, including .cbr/.cb7 comics, .bz2/.xz/.zst compression (repack as .zip, .cbz or .tar.gz), and e-books with DRM.
- GPS in photos is removed completely. The exception is route files (GPX, KML, KMZ) from running, cycling or hiking apps. The route is the file's content, so it stays, including where it starts and ends. Times, devices and author details are removed.
- Content stays: fonts keep their names and licence notices, torrents keep their trackers and files, comic books keep their title and credits, e-books keep their title, language and cover, Markdown keeps front matter other than names (title, date, tags) and its comments, and Procreate files keep the time-lapse recording (purge it in Procreate first).
- Saved differently: Blender files compressed with Zstandard come back uncompressed (larger, but Blender opens them as usual).
- Emails keep their sender, recipients, subject and date: those are the message itself. Routing details, the email app and attachment metadata are removed.
